Brososky

Here I pick up a thread mentioned earlier in “Emigration 1909”. Maria Viktoria Nilsson and Per Olsson establishes in the same area as Carl/Charles Hendrickson who dies 1927 leaving about 1 million SEK (present value). Per/Pete and Maria/Mary had at least 8 children. Among them 2 daughters marry 2 brothers Brososky. For this reason I have paid some extra interest to this Brososky family.

The immigration probably took place 1910 when the family was noted as Brosofsky. By this time the family seem to have two sons Peter and Samuel. Origin is stated as Odessa, Russia. I have had some trouble decoding names of the parents but think they were named Joseph and Matilda. Several years earlier, by 1903, a Joseph Brosowsky is noted in Halifax which suggests he was in Canada some time before the rest of the family.

Census 1911 reveals a newborn child Clara and 5 years later another 2 by the names Mary and Joe. In this 1916 census their surname is hard to read! When indexed they are called Brizaski. I myself think the surname written is Brezoski. In this later census you can also find Josie Meier noted as mother.

This obituary lists one Brososky line. Greg Brososky has also given some information at an early stage in my research. For some reason he calls Joseph below Gus instead of Joe.

With much sadness, we announce the passing of Edith Brososky on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, in Grande Prairie, at the age of 94 years.

Edith was born on November 21, 1918 in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. She was one of eight children, one of which was her identical twin. (Elsie)

She married Joseph Brososky in 1938, and together they raised seven children.

She will be sadly missed by her children: Barbara (Rod), Wayne (Carole), Linda (Rick), Pat, Karen (Bruce), Geri (Gerard), and Jan (Rod). Edith is also survived by her sister Glenora, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Joseph, six siblings, and her parents.

The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Oliver’s Funeral Chapel in Grandet Prairie. Edith was laid to rest next to Joseph at White Mountain Cemetery near Spirit River, AB.

Another obituary concerning Doreen Marie Brososky (daughter of Peter) can be found here (link).

One og the Olson sisters married to a Brososky was Anna Margret born 1910. She and at least her son Alden visited her birth parish in Sweden as well as the related Norwegian family Kolnes around 1970.

Their visit was documented in a parish yearly booklet called Vävtråden. The name of the booklet refers to the web of life as well as the famous hanging tapestry in Överhogdal. A picture of Maria Viktoria standing in front of her house can also be found in this booklet. She was the mother of Anna Margret. The death registration of Anna Margret is also available here.

The following Brososky group picture has been supplied from Kolnes connections. I don't have any info about who is who so please inform me if you know.

  1. Hello. I am a direct relative of the Brososky's you mention above.
Peter was my great grandfather. Peters parents were Florenz (Florence is on his grave) and Matilda. It is difficult to read on the 1916 census!
Can you tell me who the second Olsson sister married? Edith married Joseph, but who did Anna Margret marry?
